How We Write Scripts

Scripts fail in the first fifteen seconds or they do not fail at all. Everything about how a script is built follows from that, and it is why a script cannot be written the way an article is written and then read aloud.

Writing for the ear. A reader can go back. A listener cannot. So sentences run shorter, clauses stack less, and anything that depends on punctuation to be understood has to be rebuilt, because punctuation is invisible in audio. We read every script aloud before delivery, which catches the constructions that look fine and sound wrong.

Runtime, and how to plan for it. Conversational delivery runs at roughly 140 to 150 words per minute. Explainer and advertising work is usually slower, nearer 120, because the audience is processing new information. On that basis:

  • A 60 second ad is about 130 to 150 words
  • A 5 minute explainer is roughly 700 words
  • A 10 minute YouTube video is 1,300 to 1,500
  • A 30 minute podcast episode, if fully scripted, is around 4,000

Scripts almost always run long in the read. Budget ten per cent over and cut in the studio rather than discovering it in the edit.

The formats we write.

YouTube. The hook does the work. You have a few seconds before somebody leaves, and “in this video we will be discussing” spends them on nothing. Open with the payoff, the tension or the claim, and earn the rest.

Podcasts. Usually a scaffold rather than a full script: cold open, segment beats, the questions that must get asked, and the transitions, which are where unscripted shows most often stumble. Fully scripted episodes are for narrative work.

Explainers and demos. Written against the visuals, not before them. We deliver these in two columns so the voiceover and the on-screen action stay aligned, because a script that describes something the viewer cannot yet see does not work.

Advertising. One idea, one call to action. Sixty seconds is not long enough for two.

Course and training. Structured around what the learner should be able to do afterwards, with deliberate repetition. Repetition that reads as redundant on the page is often what makes a lesson stick.

What we need from you. The runtime, the platform, who is speaking and roughly how they talk. A script written for a presenter who is dry and precise is not the same script as one for someone warm and discursive, and a mismatch shows immediately in the read. Send an existing video or episode if you have one; imitating a voice from a sample is far more reliable than working from an adjective.

Questions we get asked

Do you write in a two-column format? Yes for anything visual, plain prose for straight voiceover. Tell us which your editor prefers and we will match it.

Can you keep our presenter’s voice? Send two or three existing scripts or transcripts. Voice is a pattern of sentence rhythm and word choice, and it can be matched from samples far more accurately than from a description.

Do you include B-roll and shot suggestions? We mark where visuals are needed and what each has to communicate. We are not directing the shoot, but a script that leaves your editor guessing is only half delivered.
