If a UK study exchange is on your horizon for 2026–27, the paperwork just got simpler. From Thursday 8 October 2026, the UK’s Immigration Rules build in specific exemptions for students taking part in the Erasmus+ programme — the first immigration step in the UK’s return to the programme, with full association resuming from 1 January 2027.
This is not a new visa. The changes, set out in the Statement of Changes HC 584 and explained in UKCISA’s guidance, work inside the existing Student, Visitor and Government Authorised Exchange routes. But for eligible students, they remove some of the most awkward qualification hurdles. Here is what actually changes, in plain English.
The Student route: the qualification hurdle is gone
Normally, a course studied on the UK’s Student route must lead to an approved qualification and meet a set level of study. Exchange semesters don’t always fit that mould — and that was the problem.
For Student route applications made on or after 8 October 2026, students participating in Erasmus+ at a participating institution:
- Are exempt from the approved-qualification requirement. Your exchange course no longer has to lead to a qualification the Home Office recognises.
- Meet the level-of-study requirement provided the study takes place at a participating institution at the level set out in the rules — reported as RQF Level 2 and above in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and SCQF Level 5 and above in Scotland.
- Can study at a State School or Academy as part of their Erasmus+ participation.
The practical upshot: if your home university’s exchange arrangement sends you to a UK institution that participates in Erasmus+, the visa side stops demanding that your semester “counts” in the old qualification framework. That mismatch was exactly what kept some exchange students outside the rules.
Work placements: the duration caps are lifted
This is the change with the most day-to-day impact. UK rules normally cap a work placement at one third of the course length (or one half in certain circumstances). Placement-heavy exchange courses kept tripping over that limit.
From 8 October, a course studied as an Erasmus+ participant that includes a work placement is exempt from both the approved-qualification requirement and the work-placement duration restrictions. If your exchange is built around a long placement — teaching assistantships, lab rotations, industry projects — the old fractions no longer apply.
Short stays and training: the Visitor route opens up
Not every Erasmus+ stay needs a Student visa. For Visitor route applications on or after 8 October:
- Participants can complete a course of study of up to six months at an accredited, participating institution (state-funded schools and academies included).
- Training at a UK organisation or educational institution in the programme is permitted, as long as it doesn’t fill a permanent role.
- Job shadowing is allowed under the same condition.
- Under-18s can do traineeships of up to 30 days, with consent from a parent or guardian and the home institution.
Separately, a new Erasmus+ lane inside the Government Authorised Exchange route covers approved traineeships, teaching stints and training assignments of up to 12 months — still sponsored by an approved operator, still non-settlement.
What to check before you apply
The exemptions are generous but narrow. They apply to Erasmus+ participants, not to every international student with an interest in the UK:
- Your institution must participate in Erasmus+. You access the programme through your university, not by applying as an individual.
- Match the activity to the route. A semester of study, a short training visit and a 12-month placement sit in different routes with different sponsors.
- Confirm sponsorship and documents. Where the route requires sponsorship, the UK organisation needs the right licence or approved-operator status.
- Watch the dates. Applications made before 8 October are decided under the old rules; applications on or after fall under the new ones.
- Budget for November. The required maintenance funds for students rise from £1,529 to £1,570 per month on 30 November 2026 — plan your proof of funds accordingly.
Rules summaries like this one are a starting point, not advice: confirm your own position with your university’s international office or UKCISA’s guidance before you apply.
Making your exchange semester count academically
The visa is only half the battle. Exchange students consistently hit the same academic speed bumps: coursework in a second language, unfamiliar essay structures, and referencing conventions that differ from home — UK markers tend to be strict on Harvard-style citations and critical analysis over description.
A few habits that pay off fast:
- Learn the marking criteria early. Ask for the module handbook in week one; UK essays are graded against explicit criteria, and “critical evaluation” usually carries the most weight.
- Nail referencing from the first assignment. Inconsistent citations are the easiest marks to lose and the easiest to fix.
- Get feedback on structure before you polish sentences. A clear argument with plain English beats elegant prose with no thesis.

Quick answers
Is this a new UK student visa?
No. The changes are exemptions and provisions inside the existing Student, Visitor and Government Authorised Exchange routes, for Erasmus+ participants at participating institutions.
I’m not in Erasmus+. Does any of this help me?
No — the standard Student route requirements still apply to you.
Do I still need a sponsor?
Where the route requires sponsorship, yes. The participating UK institution or an approved scheme operator backs your application as before.
When does the UK fully rejoin Erasmus+?
Full association resumes on 1 January 2027. These immigration changes land first, on 8 October 2026, so the visa framework is ready.
